"A woman in her
40's received a dramatic phone call from her younger sister at 8 PM on
a summer Sunday. "In a choppy voice the sister said, "Dad is dying!
Get to the rest home in Astoria as soon as you can. There isn't much
time left." The woman thanked her sister, and put the phone down,
in shock. Within minutes, she found herself throwing her suitcase
into the trunk of her car, and yelling instructions to her husband, about
the house and kids. She was on her way.
The trip was only 5 hours,
and she prayed as she drove through unfamiliar areas. Eventually,
into the dark early morning hours, by luck she found the rest home.
She wasn't even sure why it was so easy to find, but it was. Entering
her father's room, she found him tossing and turning in his bed.
The nurse had said that all of his organs were shutting down. And,
the woman knew that she was there to help him across. She was the
only one in the family, who understood spiritual matters, and often 'visited'
the inner spiritual realms in her meditation sessions. She was there
to help her father die with dignity.
She made him aware of her
presence, and then she started to talk to him about God's love for him.
He listened carefully, but, he was always a joker, and even in death, he
said said with a faint smile, "You know... there's a bunch of old people
living here." And, she smiled too. This was the part of him
that she was familiar with, the fun sense of humor. They talked about
the rest home, brief things, and the pain would come to him in waves.
When it was bad, he would toss in his bed, turning from side to side, and
sometimes sitting up and then laying back in his bed again."
She finally asked him, "Do
you want me to show you what the River Of God looks like, and what it's
like on the other side?" Without hesitation, he agreed to be shown,
and gently, she instructed him to close his eyes. They sang a spiritual
mantra, the HU (like the man's name Hugh, an ancient name for God).
He was calm as they sang it for less then a minute together. She
had tears in her eyes, but she made herself be strong for him. Then,
she said, "Imagine that you can fly very high up, as high as you want to,
and that below you is a beautiful river of Light. The River isn't
very deep, and it isn't very wide, it's made up of Light, and water, so
it is very beautiful to look at. Can you see The River?", she said
softly. He said, "Yes". She instructed him to go and sit on the bank
of the river, and that it too was made of brilliant Light. He followed
her words carefully. The meditation only lasted a few minutes.
Then she instructed him to come back to his body, and to wiggle his toes
and to open his eyes, which he did.
She then asked him, "What
did you see?" Her father could not resist another joke, "With a smile
and a twinkle in his eye he said, "Darned if it didn't look like the Columbia."
She smiled too. She never knew her father very well, but she was
sure of his sense of humor.
Minutes later, the tossing
got worse, and then he turned on his left side, and closed his eyes.
Her eyes were filled with tears. She knew the end was near.
Then, she whispered to him, "There are people waiting for you. Loved
ones who know you on the other side. Go to the Light and they will
be there to help you." He was exhaling his last weak breathe when
she said this. It was all that she could do to resist holding him
back in his body. She let him go ..."
When he passed the most amazing
thing happened. The entire room filled up with the sweet, divine
love. She cried softly. It was about 3 AM by now, and she stayed
in the room waiting for family members to arrive. The love stayed
in the room with her for hours. With the morning light, other
family members filed into the room, one by one, she would asked them if
they noticed anything in the room. A few of them said, "Yes, I feel
it too."
Dying is something that everyone
will one day go through. Some of you will be present to help dying
family members. Those who are present at the passing of a loved one
have actually been chosen to be with that person, and chosen by them.
Remember this true story, as you also might be called upon by Spirit to
give love and support as you help someone you love across the veil into
the higher realms. And, remember, if you are chosen, try to come
from as much love as you can. In that moment, you will be the most
important person in the world to the passing loved one ..."
